Picking a graphics card is mostly a question of what you are driving. The resolution and refresh rate of your monitor decide how much work the card has to do every second, and that matters far more than where a card sits in a product line.
Start with your monitor, not the card
A card that is overkill for your screen simply renders frames the display cannot show. If you play at 1080p on a 144Hz panel, the goal is holding a high frame rate in the games you actually play, not the largest number of gigabytes you can afford.
- 1080p: a mid-range card is usually plenty, and the money is better spent on a faster panel
- 1440p: the sweet spot for most builds, and where a step up in GPU pays off visibly
- 4K: demanding, and the one case where the top tier genuinely earns its price
Check the practical constraints
More builds are ruined by physical fit than by choosing the wrong model.
- Length: measure the space in your case before ordering, not after
- Power: check the recommended supply wattage and the connectors your PSU actually has
- Slots: a thick card can cover the slot beneath it
- Outputs: confirm the card has the connector your monitor uses, at the refresh rate you want
Do not forget the rest of the machine
A fast card behind an older processor will be held back at lower resolutions, where the CPU does proportionally more of the work. If you are upgrading a machine that is several years old, it is worth considering the platform as a whole rather than the card alone.
